The Plot: A Personal Turn

The film opens with a flashback to a pivotal, early case in 1964 involving a cursed mirror, which nearly cost a heavily pregnant Lorraine her daughter, Judy. This personal trauma is the emotional backbone of the current-day narrative. Now, as the Warrens contemplate retirement to focus on their daughter Judy's (Mia Tomlinson) impending wedding, an old evil re-emerges.

The central case involves the Smurl family, whose new home becomes afflicted by a sinister haunting linked to the very same ancient mirror. The story smartly weaves in a growing threat to Judy, whose own inherited psychic abilities make her a target. This creates a deeply personal stake for Ed and Lorraine, forcing them to confront not just the demonic entity but the emotional toll their life's work has taken on their family. The narrative splits its time between the escalating horror in the Smurl home and the anxiety-ridden, domestic life of the Warrens, a dual focus that simultaneously gives the film its heart and contributes to its uneven pacing.

The Scares: More Sentimental Than Terrifying

Returning director Michael Chaves (who also helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) leans into the established Conjuring template: a slow burn leading to effective, albeit predictable, jump scares involving unsettling reflections, eerie mechanical toys, and dark corners. The film generates some genuine chills—a sequence involving a terrifying vision of Annabelle is a fan highlight—but it largely sacrifices sustained, dread-inducing tension for moments of quick fright.

The true strength of Last Rites lies not in its horror, but in its sentimentality. The script is less a non-stop scare-fest and more a family drama wrapped in supernatural events. The focus on the parental struggle and the love between Ed and Lorraine is what truly resonates. The climax, where all three Warrens—Ed, Lorraine, and a newly empowered Judy—unite against the entity, is warm, inspiring, and satisfyingly personal, even if the demonic threat itself feels somewhat generic and less defined than past antagonists.

Performances and Conclusion

As always, the film is carried by the immaculate chemistry and deeply felt performances of Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren) and Patrick Wilson (Ed Warren). They imbue their characters with warmth, faith, and a weariness that makes their final, great effort feel earned. Farmiga, in particular, gets moments of raw, maternal vulnerability. Mia Tomlinson is a welcome presence as an adult Judy, effectively representing the franchise's potential future.

Verdict: The Conjuring: Last Rites is a fitting, if not perfect, swan song for the Warrens. It stumbles with a slightly overstuffed plot and a running time that drags in the middle, and it never quite achieves the classic horror heights of the first two entries. However, for fans who have grown invested in the couple and their enduring love story, it provides a worthy and emotionally rich sense of closure, confirming that the real draw of the Conjuring universe has always been the family at its core. It's a solid, average entry—recommended for those seeking a heartfelt farewell to Ed and Lorraine rather than the franchise's most terrifying chapter.
