Movie Story : The film picks up with former elite agent Jun (Kwon Sang-woo) still trying to maintain his quiet life as a successful webtoon artist. However, his luck—and his creativity—is running out. When the highly anticipated Season 2 of his comic, Assassination Agent Jun, falls flat, Jun finds himself desperate for a new plot. His fortunes take a dark and chaotic turn when a real-life terrorist attack eerily mirrors the storyline of his failing comic, leading the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to suspect him of being the mastermind. Simultaneously, the global villains who were the subjects of his previous secret missions realize Jun has been profiting off their painful pasts, leading to a worldwide convergence on Seoul.
The most notable departure in Hitman 2 is its uneven pacing. The first hour is dedicated almost entirely to Jun’s domestic struggles—hiding his past from his family, navigating the failure of his career, and dealing with over-the-top family comedy. While the chemistry between the returning cast members, particularly Kwon Sang-woo and Hwang Woo-seul-hye as his wife Mi-na, remains enjoyable, the film sacrifices the energetic pace of the original. For an action-comedy, the prolonged focus on family melodrama feels like a significant miss.
Once the plot finally clicks into place in the second half, the film finds its groove. The return of Jung Joon-ho as Jun’s perpetually panicked former handler, Deok-gyu, brings much-needed comedic momentum. The film’s greatest strength, however, lies in its visual flair. Hitman 2 significantly ups the budget and scope of its signature webtoon animation sequences, integrating them more frequently into the narrative. While some viewers may find the sudden transitions between live-action and anime jarring, these moments are often creative and allow the film to execute truly ridiculous action scenarios.
Ultimately, Hitman 2 is a classic case of sequel overreach. It attempts to juggle too many subplots—a family drama, a spy thriller, a villain revenge story, and a convoluted NIS investigation—and in doing so, loses the tight focus that made the first film so charming. The technical production quality is high, and the choreography, when it finally arrives, is satisfying. But the film’s inability to deliver a consistent tone or a concise narrative means it ends up being a subpar, but still mildly entertaining, adventure. Fans of the original will likely appreciate the returning characters, but should temper their expectations for a cohesive story.
