Movie Story : The plot kicks off when a van full of stolen gold bullion, belonging to the ruthless gangster Dylan 'Bull' Maddock (Jake Ryan), ends up at the murky bottom of a remote river. Unable to retrieve the loot themselves, Maddock and his menacing crew coerce the struggling Sea Dog Diving Company to do the job. The company is led by the decent but desperate Ernie (Arthur Angel) and his two highly skilled, but socially marginalized, employees: the resourceful Clara (Hermione Corfield) and the Aboriginal Australian diver Jimmy (Jacob Junior Nayinggul).
What begins as a dangerous but potentially life-saving salvage mission quickly spirals into a fight for survival. The river is not only an obstacle of poor visibility and cumbersome, period-appropriate diving gear, but it is also the fiercely guarded territory of a massive, pregnant bull shark.
Holmes and co-writer Gregory Moss achieve their greatest success by establishing two clear and equally potent sources of tension. On one level, there is the genuine creature-feature horror, amplified by the use of highly effective practical effects for the shark. This bull shark feels truly grounded and feral, and its attacks are brutal and visceral. Crucially, the filmmakers avoid the temptation of overexposure; the murky water and the heavy, old-school diving helmets keep the creature shrouded in suspense, leveraging the primal fear of the unseen.
The second, and perhaps more engaging, level of threat is human. Maddock and his men are not cartoon villains; they are cold-blooded pragmatists who view the divers as disposable tools. The film cleverly positions the divers between a rock and a hard place: face the monstrous jaws below, or the machine guns above. This dynamic elevates the movie from a simple creature flick into a genuine survival thriller, focusing on the complex relationships and struggles of the protagonists. Clara and Jimmy's characters, in particular, are thoughtfully written, allowing the film to briefly touch on the social and vocational prejudices of post-war Australia without sacrificing the thrilling momentum.
While the film's modest runtime (85 minutes) sometimes leaves the gangster subplot feeling slightly underdeveloped in the middle, and those expecting non-stop gore may find the restraint frustrating, Fear Below is a triumph of atmosphere and execution. It succeeds by honoring the fundamentals of suspense, prioritizing character stakes over spectacle, and delivering a unique period backdrop that makes the familiar concept feel genuinely novel.
